Joey comes out on top in day of chess excitement
On Saturday, Bothal Upper Site played host to the highly anticipated Bothal Blitz Christmas Congress, a special event that brought together young chess enthusiasts from across Northumberland.
The event saw children from various schools competing in an exciting blitz chess tournament of three sections, with three pupils from Bothal and Central Primary taking part.
One of the standout players was Joey Thompson, a Year 6 student from Central Primary School. He delivered an impressive performance, earning five points out of six with five wins and just one loss in the Under-11 category. Across all three categories, Joey (pictured) was the Under-11 overall winner.
The tournament was part of the ongoing efforts by the Northumbria Junior Chess Association (NJCA) to support and promote chess in the North-East.
The NJCA plays a role in the development of young chess talent in the region. Their mission is to provide regular junior congresses, offer guidance and support for schools and junior clubs, and assist promising players in representing their country abroad.
The charity is powered by a dedicated team of volunteers, who generously give their time to ensure the continued success of the organisation.
The Bothal Blitz Christmas Congress was a great success, showcasing the talent and enthusiasm of the next generation of chess players.
